Jewish Academy Sets Open House The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit will host an open house to intro- duce its faculty and programs from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The program will start with a presen- tation followed by an opportunity to meet with faculty and visit the school. The Jewish Academy is accepting applications for ninth, 10th and 11th grades for the 2001-2002 school year. The academy is an independent, coedu- cational Jewish day high school, offering college preparatory curriculum with intensive Jewish studies. Forty teachers were called to the bimah to be blessed and thanked for their devotion to students and learning. Singled out for length of service were Elena Glasier, 20 years; Chris Wattenberg, 18 years; Elizabeth McGough and Alisa Zachor, five years. Also cited for five years of service were the school's administrative secretaries Jennifer Lewis and Laura Lucassian. Hadassah's Detroit Chapter will host a program series tided Changes 2001. Detroit journalist George Cantor will speak 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Hadassah House, 5030 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield. His topic will be The Newspaper Game." Cantor's career was with the Detroit Free Press as a national reporter, assistant city editor and travel editor George Cantor before he went to The Detroit News, where he has been for the last 23 years. He has also authored many books on sports, travel and history, including a study guide on Israel. The event will include a dairy dinner. Members and guests are welcome. Tickets are $12 per person.
