Some 400 fun-loving guests spent the afternoon laughing at a trio of clowns, winning prizes and being fascinated by the sleight-of-hand of a captivating' magician. The Ed Pelts Orchestra turned the lunchtime party into a dance. "Their vocalist entertained with show tunes and Chanukah-related song," Winer says. The event was sponsored by the JAS Friends and Family Society, whose membership provides funding for the annual Chanukah party and other edu- cational and cultural activities during the year. Buses shuttled residents from the Anna and Meyer Prentis and Harriet and Ben Teitel Jewish Apartments in Oak Park and the Hechtman Apartments in West Bloomfield to the party at Congregation Beth Shalom. Volunteers from Jewish Association for Residential Care, Genesis B'nai Brith Girls, Berkley High School and Volunteer Impact were among those who helped serve the traditional Chanukah meal of latkes (potato pan- cakes), applesauce, cookies and bever- ages. Upon departing, everyone received a bag of chocolate Chanukah Belt (coins), with a lucky few also carting away raffle winnings, including televisions and a microwave oven.
