The new Chicago-based Jewish Education Leadership Institute (JELI) is dedicated to meeting that need. In alliance with Loyola University's School of Education, the institute will offer a joint program that allows quali- fied candidates to earn both a masters of education and administration and a day school principal's certificate. The new program begins in July. Candidates for the degree must corn- plete two summers of work at Loyola's School of Education and seminars at JELI. The curriculum also includes a six-week internship. JELI also will offer a certificate for directors of development in day schools and yeshivot. Chair of the JELI board is George Han us, head of Operation Jewish Education/The 5 Percent Mandate. Fighting Heart Disease and Strok: ADL Official Shares Insights A Washington, D.C., insider from the Anti-Defamation League gave his insights of how the ADL implements and makes policy, how it decides when to compromise with Congress, and gave updates on civil rights issues to a local ADL committee and a young leadership group on Jan 22 - 23. Michael Lieberman, Washington Counsel, lobbyist, and newly named director of the ADL Civil Rights Policy Planning Center, spoke of hate crime legislation, separation of church and state, and anti-discrimination efforts before the Michigan Region ADL's Civil Rights Committee and the Steinberg Youth Leadership Institute in Bloomfield Township. He explained why the ADL didn't press on Congress to vote down leg- islation to support posting the Ten Commandments in public schools last year. The resolution came out on a Thursday for a vote the following Monday, he said. The ADL sent our a fact sheer to Congressional members explaining why it would be wrong to vote for it. Local Writer Signs Contract Debra Darvick was looking through a bookstore four years ago and could only find books about Jews "in a minor key." "There was nothing about everyday Jews having a major Jewish experi- ence," said Darvick, a Birmingham mother of two, who set out on a four- odyssey to rectify the situation. She has spoken to Jews throughout the United States and the result, under the title Jewish Life: Stories of Discovery, Connection and Joy, will be published in the fall of 2002 by the CCAR (Central Conference of American Rabbis) Press. An excerpt from the book, about the holiday of Tu b'Shevat, appears on the Jewish News Web site: detroitjewishnevvs.com In addition to writing for the Jewish News, Darvick writes a monthly col- umn for the Jewish Life & Living Web site, and freelances for Moment and the National Jewish Monthly. — Alan Hitsk1' STAFF NOTEBOOK on page 24
