But late last year, shivah (mourning) houses became the target of a burglar. A woman posing as a delivery person or a neighbor entered the shivah houses while the family was attending the funeral, then stole items from purses and bedrooms. One West Bloomfield victim said a woman entered her house as three friends prepared for her family's return after the funeral. The woman claimed to be a delivery person waiting for her driver to arrive. She then asked to use the bathroom. While the friends continued to set up for the family, she slipped away and headed for the bedrooms. When the victim returned from the funeral and went to her bedroom, she found the woman standing in the hallway. Dressed in warm-ups and muddy shoes, she was talking on a cell phone. "She said she was looking for better cell phone reception in the home, then said her driver is close and should be here in a few minutes. Then she left," the victim said. When $450 in cash was miss- ing from her purse later that day, the victim began to suspect foul play. "I was astonished and in shock that somebody had the nerve to do something like that," she said. West Bloomfield Police Detective Bob Spencer praised the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield for getting the word out to grieving families to be on the lookout for a shivah house thief. She was identified by the victim through a photo lineup, Spencer said. He added that Davis has been cooperat- ing with police. She told the detective she is Jewish, but stated on her booking sheet that she's a Jehovah's Witness. Patti Lynne Davis in court.
