ed volunteering two years ago, after
retiring from teaching public school
there. She says she gained an apprecia-
tion of where people come from, their
circumstances and
"their push for sur-
vival."
She learned that
many people, though
working, "are still in
need" and often come
to the food pantry in
the evening.
By 5 p.m., the
event collected
$1,800, equally split
between Yad Ezra and
the Food Bank of
Oakland County.
Luger says that the
money will be used
toward food purchases
and for several special
items for the holidays.
For Tu b'Shevat, Yad

Ezra clients will receive a trail mix of
dried fruit and nuts, and on Purim,
clients get hamantashen (pastries), candy
and a short informational piece about
how to celebrate the
holiday "in an enjoy-
able, delicious way"

A Bar-Ilan University professor will
speak on "Torah, Science and Politics"
on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Professor Natan Aviezer, who chairs
the department of physics of the
Ramat Gan, Israel, campus, will pre-
sent a summary of his year-long course
given to Bar-Ilan students. The pro-
gram starts at 7:30 p.m.
"Science and religion are disciplines
with much to say to one another," he

said. "Indeed, some of the most excit-
ing scientific discoveries of the 20th
century — in cosmology, physics,
molecular biology — bear directly on
our understanding and appreciation of
religious belief and faith."
Aviezer will offer his evaluation of
the Israeli/Arab conflict. A discussion
will follow.
Event sponsors are the Zionist
Organization of America/Michigan
Region and the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
