hen I was in Israel last month, my
Israel Government Tourist Office-
sponsored trip had a purpose: to let
the world know that it is safe to visit

Israel.
Fortunately, my article appeared the weekend
before the bus bombing in Netanya. The juxtaposi-
tion still haunts me, yet I had few reservations
when one of my sons traveled this month on a free
Birthright Israel trip. I was more concerned about
his reaction than worried about his safety.
The security and peace
issues clouded the trip for
him, and he worries about
increased violence after the
Feb. 6 Israeli election. Others
share those concerns, but con-
tinue to visit Israel out of a
deep sense of brotherhood and
nationhood.
Michigan's Unity Mission
to Israel last week — more
than 200 strong — is a solid
ALAN HITSKY case in point. Beginning on
Associate Editor
page 6 of this issue, you will
find the experiences, emotions
and reactions of our Unity Mission travelers.
In a note to us from Israel during the Mission,
Jewish News Story Development Editor Keri Guten.
Cohen wrote: "I knew tourism was down after the
U.S. State Department travel advisory, and I knew
Israel's image was hurting from the media coverage
of the intifada (uprising).
"I was part of a mission with a noble mission —
to show support for Israel in times of trouble. And
I liked that. It made us feel good and I could tell
Israelis felt good about seeing us.
"They loved the idea.that we chartered an El Al
flight direct from Detroit and that we weren't afraid
to be there. They especially -
wanted us -to tell our friends
and the rest of the world that
life goes on and they still hope
for peace."
Yes, life goes on. And as I
told friends and co-workers
before leaving on my own
Israel mission, I was no more
concerned about visiting Israel
than I was about crossing a
street here. You have to look
Keri Guten Cohen
both ways in both places.
Do we abandon our friends
and family when they get in trouble? I hope not.
Two-hundred Michiganians felt the same way last
week, taking a whirlwind non-vacation to show
Israel that we care.
