little-known, twice-a-day
men's minyan has seating
available daily in an unex-
pected site.
Inside a West Bloomfield senior
residence, the Chaim Kaufman
Chapel is a synagogue with no dues.
"It is a place where those who
would like to come and pray are
welcome," says Carol Rosenberg,
associate director of Jewish Home
and Aging Services whose
Fleischman Residence/Blumberg
Plaza houses the service.
Even with participation by resi-
dents and their families, the regular-
ly scheduled religious
services are sporadically
attended.
"In our setting with
frail older adults, it is
difficult to anticipate a
full minyan [prayer
quorum of 10] daily,"
says Rabbi Avie
Shapiro, director of reli-
gious activities at

Fleischman.
"Sometimes we have a lot of men
here and sometimes there are pre-
cious few," adds Rosenberg.
The service is available to all men,
including those needing to say kad-
dish (prayer for the dead) or observe
a yahrtzeit (anniversary of family
member's death).
Rosenberg says even those who
are affiliated with other synagogues,
or who are not available on a regular
basis, are urged "to come in and do
such a mitzvah for us."
For many of the residents, it is
difficult to pray elsewhere; they
count on the religious service that is
held in the convenience of their own
chapel.

Services are arranged around
Flei.schman's meal schedule, with
Shajyarit (morning service) held
after breakfast and Minchah (after-
. noon service) and Afaariv (evening
service) held an hour apart, separat-
ed by dinner. Shabbat and High
Holiday services are also conducted.
"The ser:ice is run by and for our
seniors, the statesmen in our com-
munity," Rosenberg says. "They real-
ly are iii need of additional commu-
nity support to enrich each service."
Rabbi Shapiro says, "Not only is
it our religious responsibility to have
a minyan, but also we take great
pride in seeing our elders continuing
this fulfillment of religious tradi-
tion." ri
