mer president of the Southfield
Lawyers Association, underscores
Sonnenschein's advice.
"I am planning for retirement, and
his (Sonnenschein's) advice to me was
to get away from the speculative low-
yield stocks. You want something that
will yield enough income to replace
your income from work. You need to
have to a combination of growth ori-
ented stocks which pay a lower divi-
dend and something like fixed income
bonds, or preferred stocks if you want
to provide income to live on," said
Gettleson.
Does he heed Sonnenschein's advice?
"Even though I am licensed as a CPA
as well as an attorney, I still listen to
him," said Gittleson.

People are richer
today, more affluent,
and want more
out of life.

Charles Newman is the former
Director of International Business
Development for the Automotive
Components Group of the Ford
Motor Corporation (now known as
Visteon). After leaving Ford, he
entered the consulting business for
nine years, and now, as he winds down
his career, spends his time between
Michigan and Florida, "When I was
working, I was focused upon my job at
Ford. Investments were secondary;
they were a mode of aggressive, specu-
lative gambling immediately directed
by me. Someone like Sonnenschein
was just my broker. I was looking for
the big kill, for instant gratification. It
was all hit or miss. I listened to rumor
and to conjecture, I didn't study the
market because I didn't have time, I
had a steady income," said Newman.
"But when I started thinking about
when I was truly going to retire, I had
a whole different view. I wanted to
maintain a certain lifestyle. So David
(Sonnenschein) was no longer my
stock order taker. We developed a plan
for retirement that established goals for
spending and profit on my invest-
ments. I moved from gambling to
investing as I moved from the short
term focus of looking for a home run
to a more long range approach." said
Newman.
"I now have a vision of what success
is like," said Newman. ❑
