n an effort that ties together Conservative Jews world-
wide, the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs, Inc.
(FJMC) is encouraging the wearing of tefillin.
_ Worn during morning prayer, tefillin are comprised of
leather straps and a pair of leather boxes, strapped to the weak-
er arm and to the head about the hairline.
The boxes contain parchment scrolls of Torah passages,
which refer to the wearing of tefillin. For
example: 'And you shall bind them for a
sign upon your hand and a remembrance
for between your eyes." (Exodus 13:9)
FJMC has scheduled World Wide Wrap for
Sundays Jan. 28, to celebrate the mitzvah of
wearing tefillin and to educate, motivate
and encourage the practice. All
Conservative Detroit area synagogues are
Michael Balkin participating.
Each men's club has made a pledge with
the amount of individuals they expect to draw to the event.
"Men's clubs are signing up from Conservative synagogues
from all over the world, including Israel, Australia and France.
Around the country, we hope to get at least 10,000 individuals,
with close to 9,000 already having pledged to be in the pro-
gram," says Michael Balkin, an executive committee member
of the FJMC in New York as well as a past president of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek's Men's Club.

7. Place the steel rosh around the head,
making sure (liar the bayit rests on your

Varying Programs

Synagogues will individualize programming, ranging from a
simple demonstration of putting on tefillin to study sessions on
the Halachah (Jewish law) and techniques of wearing tefillin.
At Shaarey Zedek, one program will be during religious
school for students and their parents and one will be for the
general congregation. Personal trainers will help instruct partic-
ipants in the wearing of tefillin.
At Congregation Beth Shalom, the Rev. Samuel Semp
will demonstrate how to put on tefillin. Shaarey Zedek
will have a display of open tefillin sets for individuals to
view what is inside them.

information on the World Wide Wrap, access the Web

orklwi
ap.org or call the Federation Of Jewish
en's Clubs at (212) 749-8100 or (800) 288-FJMC.
Times and programming details for local Conservative
magogues are available by calling the synagogues directly.

Most area congregations will show the 24-minute video,
"The Ties that Bind," a nationally distributed 1999 production
created by Balkin. with the support of the. FJMC. It includes
historical photos, documentary-style commentary and a
demonstration of tefillin construction. The film gives step-by-
step instruction of the placement of each component of the
tefillin with discussion of the meaning and blessings that
accompany each part of the process.
The hope is for the program to promote the Jewish ritual of
putting on tefillin for prayer for all Jews over the b'nai mitzvah
age of 12 for girls and 13 for boys.
Citing the Conservative movement's inclusion of women in
fulfilling the commandment of wearing tefillin, Rabbi David
Nelson of Congregation Beth Shalom says, "In my minyan, I
would like to see more men and more women putting on
tefillin.”
