"When I went to Israel and planted
trees, I brought back a rock," she says.
"It's on a shelf in our den. When I look
at it, I am back in the Israeli forest."
"I usually pick someplace warm,
that's the key," explains Harold, a physi-
cian. "Now, we've been doing a lot of
European traveling as well."
Favorite winter destinations for the
Leaches include the Caribbean and
Mexico, Florida and Arizona. This win-
ter, they have four warm weather vaca-
tions planned, assisted by Shelley
Fogelman of Wolf Travel.
Their first trip of the winter season
was Doral Spa and Country Club in
Miami for golf "Then we cruised for
fun and sun over New Year's," says
Harold, on a Holland America western
Caribbean cruise. In February, during
Suzie's school break (she is a kinder-
garten teacher at Shaarey Zedek's Beth
Hayeled) they will head back down
south, this time to Boca Raton.
"Besides relaxing, vve want to look
for a possible place for the future,"
Harold says.
April takes the Leaches to Scottsdale,
Ariz., where they visit with friends and
enjoy the West.

Sunny Arizona

Scottsdale is increasingly becoming a
winter destination for many
Michiganians. 'A lot of our friends are
going there now, more and more people
that we know, and we're discovering
people we did not know were there,
says Fran Gold of Bloomfield Hills.
Fran and her husband Ed, an attor-
ney, will be renting a place this winter
for three months in Scottsdale. While
Fran stays in Arizona, Ed commutes on
a weekly basis.
This is a trial, to see if we like it. We
tried it for one month last year, and real-
ly enjoyed it," Fran says. "We have
always done a lot of traveling. We used
to go some place warm, for a shorter
rime, and we have traveled to Europe,
the Orient and Africa. This is to see
how we like being in one place."
The Golds first visited Arizona 12
years ago. "I love the Southwest," says
Fran. "It's interesting, and I enjoy the
ambiance, the art and the architecture.
"We're going to be staying in a town
on the border of Scottsdale and
Carefree, and when I travel up the high-
way, where the names of the streets are
Tranquil, Leisure Lane, Meander Way,
Languid Lane, Nonchalant Avenue, it is
very soothing."
The Golds enjoy the climate, and
have taken up golf with a vengeance.

"The courses are beautiful, with beauti-
ful, powerful vistas," says Fran, who
took up the game four years ago. She
also enjoys the shopping and restaurants
in the Scottsdale area.
Jackie and Myron Milgrom of
Southfield also enjoy Scottsdale, where
they rent a house for two months every
winter. "I always wanted to be an
Indian," jokes Jackie about her enjoy-
ment of the Southwest. "It is quiet and
beautiful," she says. "And I like Western
clothes, the jewelry, Southwestern art
and antiquing."

Happy Wandering

Not everyone is content to stay in one
spot all winter long. For those with a lit-
tle wanderlust, travel agents say Mexico
and the Caribbean are the hot spots.
Cabo San Lucas in Mexico draws
many, says David Fishman, president of
Cadillac Travel in Southfield. "People
are getting time shares, condos or villas,
and are spending more time there. It's a
very chic, in place, with great restaurants
and beaches.
Gerri Kalt, a travel agent at Bee Kalt
Travel in Royal Oak, concurs. "It's
Mexico, but it's different. Also, there are
charters from Detroit, as well as flights
on American Airlines."
This winter, she adds, "tons of people
are going to Puerto Vallana, especially
repeat visitors." A little more unique,
and expensive, are the Turks and Caicos
islands in the British West Indies. "They
are quiet, and have the most beautiful
beaches, and great restaurants," says
Kalt." It's like Grand Cayman.
Cruising is still very popular, with
every line and destination enticing.
But not everyone is intrigued by lay-
ing beachside with a book and a
daiquiri. Ski vacations have a healthy
group of devotees, with many still choos-
ing that perennial hot spot, Aspen, Colo.
'A lot of skiers have condos, or they stay
in condos," says Fishman. 'Aspen is
where people go to see, be seen, eat well,
shop well and enjoy great skiing."
Snowmass, -adjacent to Aspen, is pop-
ular with family groups,. as is Vail. But
they are hardly the only ski destinations.
"Whistler Resorts, outside
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,
is great for people looking for some-
thing different, a little more challena-
ing,says Kalt.
Fishman recommends the Stein
Erickson Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah. "It
is very, posh, very elegant, and the skiing
is great," he says. "They are into cus-
tomer details, and it is so upscale and a
little more discreet. It is also central to
many other Utah ski resorts."
