Pitt has backed up singers from Frank
Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr:, with
whom he is pictured.

Pitt said. The last he heard, about half
of them were still alive.
After he left the Navy, Pitt toured
with Bob Chester, Buddy Morrow and
Tex Beneke. In the early 1950s, he
learned that his mother, who'd moved
to Detroit to be near her married
daughter, was ill.
"By then, I was fed up with travel-
ing anyway," he said. "I was offered a
job on thf WXYZ [radio] staff, so I
decided to stay here."
Mack Pitt and his wife, Dotty, first
met at a party, where he'd been invited
to meet some nice Jewish girls.
"She was gorgeous," Mack Pitt said.
"From the first time I saw her, I said,
`You know you're going to marry me."
The couple, who have two sons, live
in Southfield and are members of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, will cel-
ebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
And the mandolin that Mack Pitt
stuffed in the back of the closet so many
years ago? It has a new lease on life.
"A couple years ago, I was playing the
synthesizer and sax at a night club here.
The owner was a Greek fellow; we were
always joking around," Pitt said.
On his break, the sound of the
mandolin came over the loudspeakers.
"Mack, now there's an instrument to
play. The Greek people just love the
sound of the mandolin," the owner
told him.
The next night, Pitt dusted off his
mandolin skills and brought the
instrument with him.
"I really floored them," he said. 111
