Gertel is reaching out and inviting com-
munity members from outside U-M to
shale in the collection's wealth. Last
spring, Gertel put a number of the col-
lection's rarest pieces on display during
Judaic Journeys, an exhibition open to
the public. The exhibit included a 10th
century Pentateuch and the first transla-
tion of a Hebrew Bible printed in the
New World.
"Ore of the things Elliot was hired
for is to let the world and the Detroit
community, know about our collection,"
said Barbara Rosen, the collection's cata-
loauer
oguer.
Gertel came to U-M with extensive
experience. He previously was Judaica
librarian at Florida Atlantic University in
Boca Raton. In addition to speaking flu-
ent French, German, Hebrew, and
Yiddish, he holds a masters degree in
library science from the University of
Kentucky and a master's of philosophy
in modern Jewish studies from Oxford.
These qualifications make Gertel
ideal to watch over the expanding collec-
tion. Some of his plans for strengthen-
ing the collection and its reputation
include creating a Web site as well as
putting out a regular newsletter to keep
patrons up to date with the latest devel-
opments.

On 7he Lookout

Currently, he is busy acquiring addition-
al titles for the collection. He said that
while putting together Judaic Journeys,
he come across some voids in the collec-
tion that he would like to see filled.
"We only have the Forward (a New
York-based Jewish newspaper) up to
1949, and then, the collection starts
again more recently. I look for material
that would fill in these gaps."
Other recent acquisitions include the
Labor Zionist Archives and limited edi-
tion illustrated books by the Polish-born
artist Arthur Szyk. Each year, 2,500 new
titles are added, including every known
Israeli scholarly publication.
According to Marlene Gitelman, the
collection's Hebrew Cataloguer, Gertel's
addition to the library staff means that,
now, "there can be an organized and
intensive effort to develop the collec-
tion..'
Gertel says he's up to the challenge.
After more than two years on the job, he
said he is still looking forward to all that
can be done with the collection, and all
that is left to be discovered.
Sitting surrounded by thick, leather-
bound Yiddish and Hebrew books at
the U-M Graduate Library, he said, "I
keep coming up with new treasures."
