The Bigger They Are,
The Harder We Fall

11111 here are many contradictory "wise sayings”
that confront us each day. Compare for
example, "The bigger, the better" and "Good
things come in small packages."
As companies and government organi-
zations grow to unheard of sizes, we,
the consumers, are suffering.
Recently, a reader from California
called to have me send some informa-
tion. He revealed that he had been
trying to reach the Jewish News for
almost a week with no success. The
reason? National directory assistance
told him our area code was 810; it has
SY
been 248 for some time now. Upon
MAN ELLO
discovering the problem, he called his
Editorial
long distance carrier to inquire about
Assistant
getting the wrong information correct-
ed and was told it couldn't be done.
Well, that just reinforces the experience I had with
the same public service agency. I called to get a number
and was told there was no listing. Calling back five min-
utes later, I had a different operator locate the number
for me. (I never knew that getting a number could be
done in a matter of minutes; wow!)
My other gripe is with the U.S. Postal Service. If the
problem I will describe only happened on occasion, I
would chalk it up to the large amount of mail
processed. However, it happens at least two times a
week.
We have had mail we sent mistakenly delivered back
to our office because the "encoder" person used the
return address to send the mail, not the addressee's.
Twice already, I have put the mail back into the system
only to have it returned to us. One letter bounced back
three times; I finally called the person and read her the
information because there was a time element involved.
Is bigger better? Maybe for ice cream cones, but not
on the organization and service level. Here's one time
when size does matter. 111
