It was a tradition started during
Michigan Miracle Mission I in 1993
by the late Ambassador David
Hermelin. A salami addict, the
Bingham Farms philanthropist and
communal leader thought everyone
should share in his love of "the perfect
food," so he provided a salami for
every participant — all 1,200.
In loving memory of David, those
on the Michigan Unity Mission were
treated to sliced salami and rye bread
Sunday, Jan. 14, as they waited to
board their charter El Al plane at
Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Only trouble was that Southfield
caterer Paul Kohn's kosher knives were
not allowed through airport security.
Someone innocently suggested bor-
rowing a knife from the
nearby airport restaurant,
but there was no chance it
was kosher.
Someone else suggested
plastic utensils — which
would not have been up

to the task. Meanwhile,
Hermelin
that unwrapped salami
was making its presence
known — and people were starting to
be drawn by the scent.
The salami crisis was finally solved
by Franklin's Jane Sherman, who
worked diplomatically behind the
scenes to get the knives to Kohn. But
he could only use them if a security
guard stood watch at the table. David
would've loved it!

The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit has received a $5,000
Bookshelf Grant from the New York-
based AVI CHAT Foundation.
According to the guidelines of the
grant, funds may be used for books,
audio visual items and software. At
least half the money must be used for
Judaic materials.
The AVI CHAT Foundation is a pri-
vate foundation dedicated to support-
ing and encouraging the growing
Jewish day school movement. Its
Bookshelf Grant program began in the
1999-2000 school year. The JAMD is
one of 25 schools to be chosen for
2000-2001, the second and final year
of the pilot program.
"Through this grant," said Rabbi
Lee Buckman, JAMD head of school,
"our library will be better equipped to
effectively serve both our teachers and
students, helping to enrich the class-
room curriculum and develop the
research skills our students will need
for college."

Beth Ahm Hosts
Former Diplomat

Congregation Beth Ahm will host
Moshe Aumann, a retired Israeli diplo-
mat, for a Shabbat Weekend of
Dialogue, with discussion and his
assessment of the Mideast situation.
A 6 p.m. Kabbalat Shabbat service
will be held Friday, Jan. 19, followed
by Shabbat dinner (by reservation)
and an informal talk by Aumann,-for-
mer consul general of the State of
Israel in Washington, D.C., New York
and the Atlantic states.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20,
Aumann will speak on "Israel at the
Crossroads: The Upcoming Elections,
What Is At Issue?", followed by a
question-and-answer time and discus-
sion moderated by synagogue member
Irving Nusbaum.
Areas highlighted in Aumann's talks
will include discussion of how the
break down of peace talks will impact
American Jews, what is at stake for
both Jews and non-Jews, and land that
is being given away for the sake of
peace.
The weekend's events are chaired by
Abigael Behar-Montefiore, who with
her husband Beth Ahm's Cantor
