hen Herb Kaufman's daughters Ilene and Patty were old enough to type, they

hand typed yahrzeit notices and envelopes on an IBM Selectric typewriter.

Knowing Ira Kaufman's great grandson Chad and great granddaughter Stephanie were

monitoring the chapel's Web site and answering e-mail inquires, we don't have to imagine

the smile on Ira's face, we just look

at GrandpaHerbie.

CARL SWEET, 83, of Novi, died
Jan. 14.
He is survived by his beloved wife,
Inez Sweet; daughters and son-in-law,
Laurel Sherman of West Bloomfield,
Joyce and Michael Cantor of West
Bloomfield; brother, Fred Sweet of
Oak Park; grandchildren, Amy and
Joshua Cantor, Jessica and Emily
Sherman. He was the father-in-law of
the late Mitchell Sherman.
Services and interment at the
Clover Hill Park Cemetery.

Hills, died Jan. 9.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Laurence and Gail

Louis Spitzer of Florida; grandchil-
dren, Rebecca and Robert Kiessling,
Eric Wasser, Ronald Samuels. Carolyn

dren, Caleb, Alex. Mrs. Wasser was
the beloved wife of the late Ben
Wasser.

Shecter.

mer Detroiter of Palm Springs,
Calif , died Jan. 10. She was the first
ad taker for the Highland Park
newspaper; then she managed a
record store in Highland Park. After
her marriage, she and her husband
managed ice cream stores and
Thrifty Drug, Nottingham Drug
and Parkside drugstore.
During the Depression years,
Mrs. Wertheimer took food and
clothing to symphony players living
at the Tuller Hotel. She loved books
and was responsible for the -building
of a library on the east side of
Detroit.

She is survived by her daughters
and son-in-law, Doris Wertheimer,
Lois and Dr. Morris J. Lipnik;
granddaughters, Susan (John)
Bustard and Carol (Alex) Viola;
great-grandchildren, Jamie Bustard,
Julie Bustard, Stephen Viola; sister-
in-law, Esther Coggin. She was the
beloved wife of the late Jack
Wertheimer; beloved sister of the
late Ben Coggin, Dr. Sam Coggin,
Dr. Robert Coggin; dear sister-in-
law of the late Pauline and
Annabelle.
Interment in Desert Memorial
Cemetery in California.
Contributions may be made to the
Detroit Institute of Arts or the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Activist Leuchter
Dies In Florida

New York/JTA — Jewish activist
and journalist Ben Zion Leuchter
died Jan. 14 after suffering from
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's
disease.
Leuchter, who lived in Key
Biscayne, Fla., was a former presi-
dent of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid
Society and a past chair of CLAL.
He also served as a longtime
Jewish Telegraphic Agency director.
