Mischa's photo, we fell in love with him. They assured us he was healthy and we took him home." Multiple Jobs Richard and Marilyn feel they are holding down four separate jobs. Both have elderly mothers, ages 90 and 88, one of whom was recently moved to a nursing home near Bay City. They also have two healthy chil- dren that require parenting, Richard has a demanding full-time position, and Marilyn now has only one part- time position. And Mischa is a full- time job for two people. They get through the emergencies and the multi-demands on their life by taking one day at a time. Some days are tougher than others. It was difficult for Richard when he missed Samantha's dance concert because he spent the evening in the emergency room with Mischa. "Hopefully, God has a plan," says Richard. "Marilyn and Richard went through all the right channels to adopt this child," explains Rozeanne Sedler, social worker at Jewish Family Service in Southfield. "The child's papers included med- ical records that indicated there was no serious health problem. This may not have been the entire truth but it matters little to Marilyn and Richard. They have made a total commitment to this child." One of Mischa's doctors believes that if the boy was in Russia today, "the chances are very good that he would not be alive." Dr. Karen Muraszko, chief of pediatric neurolo- gy at Mott Children's Hospital, says, "I visited Russia as a medical consul- tant and although parts of the Russian medical system are wonder- fill, it is still a country under stress and sometimes the medical treatment isn't that good. "I'm convinced that Mischa is alive today because he is in the United States and has parents like the Dressers. They are exceptional par- ents. Mischa responded well to the very long and complex surgery and treatment and I am personally opti- mistic for him. He is young and the odds are in his favor." ❑ Contributions can be sent to Mikhail Dresser Get Well Mischa, 512 North Lincoln, Suite 101, Bay City, MI 48708. Phone: (517) 892-8552.
