(American & Chaldean-Style) LUNCH SPECIAL7 SANDWICH WITH SOUP OR SALAD ANY DAY I Fl g ,a di covers the late senator's approach to overcom- ing poverty and eco- nomic injustice. The second notes changes in welfare provisions from the time of Kennedy's death to the present. The third presents the author's views on what needs to be done regarding national poli- cies and community action. "The agenda is not simply to reduce pover- ty but to raise the incomes of the much larger number of peo- ple who don't earn _ enough to support their families at an even barely adequate level," says Edelman, who serves on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations that address the problems so vital to him. "I was hoping to reach people who don't necessarily know a great deal about these issues. I think it's important that more people in our country under- stand why we haven't done a better job and how we could do a better job." Edelman traces his public interests in • part to a Jewish her- itage that focused on issues of justice. His paternal grand- father and forebears were rabbis. "We had a lot of consciousness in our house about Jewish teaching, and, of course, lov- ing your neighbor as yourself is very much at the heart of Jewish teaching," says Edelman, whose three grown sons have been raised in these tradi- tions. "There always was a sense of everyone being treated with respect and fairly, and I think that had some good effects on me. "I think the Jewish community has a strong proclivity toward supporting good public policy in our country from a progressive point of view. That's not to speak for each and every one of us, but I think in general as a commu- nity. Although we do have that inter- est, I'm not sure we always carry it out DREAM on page 71 Peter Edelman: 7 think the Jewish community has a strong proclivity toward supporting good public policy in our country om a progressive point of view."
