his week's cover story is an unusual venture for a
Jewish publication. But it's an important story, one
that needs to be told.
,
In laying the groundwork, we asked ourselves some pretty
hard questions to be sure that it serves
your needs and interests while being fair
to everyone. That last question also res-
onated for many of the Arab Americans
to whom special writer Debra Isaacs
talked; many feared that we were trying
to make trouble rather than simply
report on an interesting fact about
American life.
As it turned out, her story, which
begins on page 6, contains fascinating

the American Jewish community. As it
points out, Arab Americans are, in many ways, repeating the
Jewish experience in this country and developing a new
identity and political cohesion that lets them speak out

effectively on the issues that concern them. Companion sto-
ries spotlight Spencer Abraham's nomination to President-
elect George W. Bush's Cabinet and local reaction to the
increasing national role of the Arab American community.
The largest concentrations — in Los Angeles, Detroit,
Chicago and New York — are shaking off some of their past
national roots, as Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian or Palestinian,
and creating a new unity of purpose. In some cases, their
interests, particularly in trying to alter American policy in
the Middle East, may conflict with Jewish goals. In others,
such as ending racial and ethnic stereotyping, they share
goals with our community.
Watching the suspicion and hostility that has tormented
Arab-Israeli relationships for more than half a century, we
wondered whether that is bound to be repeated in this
country. As our Editorial argues (page 31), not necessarily.
We hope you will find much to engage you in this special
report prepared by Jewish Renaissance Media, parent com-
pany of the Jewish News.

As always, we invite your feedback.
