status and expectations of Michigan's
Arab American community.
"For a long time, they stayed within
themselves," he said. "I say, when you
are in America, first be a citizen of
America.. Keep your ethnic back-
ground; it's very important for you
and for your children. But don't cut
yourself off from your neighbors."
Daoud said he was concerned about
recent reports of ethnic taunting in the
West Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills
schools.
"The teenagers reflect the attitudes
of their parents," he said. "You go to
school to learn, not to fight. Maybe
we should take a step back and take a
look at what's really going on."
The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit cooperates with the
Arab American community on many
fronts, but does not run specific programs,
said Marla Feldman, associate director.
However, the JCCouncil's
Immigration Coalition does bring
together members of ACCESS (the
Arab Community Center for Economic
and Social Service, the Chaldean
Council, the Chaldean Federation, the
ADC, Jewish Family Service and oth-
ers. Council also helps facility local
Seeds of Peace programming and is try-
ing to set up meetings between local
imams and rabbis this spring.
Dearborn is home to the most
recent Arab immigrants to the United
States. While many families are well
educated, others have spent years in
refugee camps. Children may have had
no formal schooling or health care,
and food was scarce.
The social service organization
ACCESS serves these needs and more,
working with non-Arabic families as
well as those of Arabic descent.
Ishmael Ahmed, executive director,
has been on the ACCESS board since
its founding.
"The Arab American community
has had fraternal and religious organi-
zations for about 100 years. We're
rather new in development of other
types of organizations," he said. "But I
think the Arab American community
is ready to take a great leap and form
the same kinds of organizations as the
Jewish community." ❑
