very picture tells a story, especially images
that reveal the beauty, strength, resilience
and pain of Holocaust survivors from the
Detroit Jewish community.
The Jewish Community Center's Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building in Oak Park and DMC/Sinai-Grace Hospital's
Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families host a first
group of images in a photographic exhibition titled,
"Portraits of Honor: Detroit's Holocaust Survivors."
The black and white portraits, printed on museum-
quality archival paper to preserve their longevity, are
complemented by brief biographies of the subjects.
The first in a series of photographs, this exhibition will
be on display Jan. 15-Feb. 9 at the JCC in Oak Park.
It includes images of 54 survivors, captured by Jewish
News photographer Krista Husa.
Dr. Charles Silow, a clinical psychologist and direc-
tor of the project, made it his mission to give the sur-
vivors a living legacy before they die. Though the idea
lay dormant for 10-15 years, last year he secured a
grant from the Jewish Fund and proceeded to docu-
ment the lives of the Detroit survivors. "There seemed
to be some urgency after my father, Nathan, a survivor,
died three years ago," says Silow.
Silow, Husa and Tom Kirby have taken 250 photo-
graphs to date. The project will culminate with an
exhibit at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery in the
West Bloomfield JCC next November and December,
and Silow plans to have all of the photos exhibited per-
manently, in smaller formats, at the JCC in Oak Park.
"There are many fine oral history projects about
Holocaust survivors," says Silow, "but this captures the
faces. Some are photographed with their families, and
their faces light up when they're pictured with their
grandchildren. The photos show the continuity of life."
Volunteers interviewed the subjects and wrote the biogra-
phies. This allowed the survivors to leave their own mes-
sages. All were asked what they wanted to say to the world.
Originally from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary,
Romania, Germany, Austria and elsewhere around the
globe, the participants suffered overwhelming losses in
the Holocaust. The photographs and biographies reveal
their ongoing pain, as well as their strength and spirit.
-Says Silow, "Despite enormous suffering, they came to
America, to Detroit, and made new lives. They worked,
raised families and made contributions to Jewish life and
culture, to our community and to our country.
"The photo exhibit pays honor and respect to their
