KINETIC KLEZMER from page 67
iirection, and the steps and the notes
:ame together simultaneously. As the
Diece is taken from one venue to
mother, refinements are being made.
"The most important thing about
:he back and forth [between Pilobolus
and the Klezmatics] was a lot of talking
about the ideas that would inspire and
nfluence the piece. And there was a lot
)f trading of texts," says the Klezmatics'
Frank London, who also has composed
ion-Jewish dance music for companies
n New York, Belarus and Tokyo.
"Pilobolus members were listening
:o a lot of my music and the
Klezmatics' music, and I had seen
:heir company perform. I'm sure that
elements of this music will end up on
:he next Klezmatics album. Davenen is
3. 35-minute piece so it's not long
enough to be a record [on its own]."
London describes the 15-year work
Df the Klezmatics as featuring sounds
:hat range from the traditional to origi-
ial with nonstop combinations of
path. Sextet musicians also have ties to
groups that entertain using other styles.
"The NFJC gives artists a pretty
-
open-ended mandate to create pieces
based on who we are," says London,
who plays the trumpet and whose
group just completed a recording, The
Well, with Israeli singer-guitarist
Chava Alberstein. "I don't think any of
the creators could have told [early on]
what the piece would be like when it
was done.
"Klezmatics [members] want our
work to be about more than just giv-
ing concerts, and we've thrown our-
selves into situations where we're part
of bigger pieces. We're starting a new
project — an annual Purim carnival
with the Klezmatics and guests."
Although the Klezmatics have filled
their careers with Jewish themes and
Jewish sounds, the Davenen experience
is just opening some of those spiritual
opportunities to Pilobolus.
"This piece delves into material that
I haven't worked through in a long
time so it's interestingly stimulating,"
Wolken says. " I allow the piece to
work on me emotionally in a different
way, and I read different books now in
different ways than I used to. I think
Davenen will inspire me to do other
religious pieces."
