Friendly Encounters
The vast majority of the boys learns
at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and Yeshivas
Darchei Torah day schools in
Southfield. Almost all know each
other; most were drawn by friends or
older siblings
Arveh Sherizen, 11, of Oak Park is
in the sixth grade at Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah. He's played in the JCC
hockey leagues for about six years.
His older brother Moshe, 16, also
played; Binyomin, his 4-year-old
brother, is gearing up for the league
by raking a JCC junior hockey class.
On Dec. 17, Arveh's parents, Tzvi
and Chana Sherizen, came to watch
their son play. Aryeh's mom, Chana,
says in-line hockey provides "a good
way to learn about sportsmanship."
The games are a family activity for
the Jacobovitz family, too. Rabbi
Avrohom and Bayla Jacobovitz of
Oak Park come to watch sons Shmuel
Chaim, 13, Ahron, 11, and
Yechezkel, 8.
Shmuel Chaim, a Darchei Torah
student who has played for six years,
is the Yellow ream goalie. love the
pressure!" he says.
Beth Yehudah's Avi Kohn has
played for four years. He's 10 now, so
has just joined the older team. His
brother Daniel, 15, a student at the
Yeshiva Gedolah high school in Oak
Park, is watching from the sidelines
with his mother Leah.
Daniel played for the past seven
years, but is too old for the team now.
He gives some strategy pointers to Avi
during a timeout.
One of the stars of the Red team is
Oak Parker Gavi (Gavriel) Simcha,
12, a Darchei Torah eighth grader. He
scored 12 goals on Dec. 17. His
brother, "N.Z." (Nachmon Zeide), a
Darchei Torah fourth grader, played
earlier that day in the younger league.
The boys were cheered on by their
father, Rabbi Dovid Simcha, brother,
Yekusiel, sister and brother-in-law
Dobi and Shimmy Baum, and the
boys' 5-month-old niece, Raizle
Soroh.
"It's a wonderful game," says Rabbi
Simcha, kvelling over Gavi's perfor-
mance. "The boys let off a lot of
energy. Of course, they all want to
win, but they -don't take it too seri-
ously if they lose. That's a credit to
their coaches — they've got great
coaches."
.
Coach's View
One of these "great coaches" is
Southfield parent Moshe
Lichtenstein, whose son Avraham
Yitzchak, 11, is on the Red team.
"I had no idea what I was doing at
first," he said. "But after a couple of
games, I figured it out. Now I'm hav-
ing the time of my life."
He says the boys aren't really
taught how to play the game. "They
learn under fire and just pick it up."
Oak Parker Rafi Berger, 11, joined
the game two weeks ago. Says his
mother, Devorah: "He has improved
at least 200 percent."
Like all parents, she sees the game
as a great outlet: "They're boys. They
need to run around!"
What do the boys themselves think
about the game? They all say: "It's
fun!" El
