tern ... Everybody continued their par- tying with much zest ... although soaked to the skin. At the London Chop House on Congress, Welsh singer Torn Jones brought the house down for the pre- dominantly Jewish New Year's Eve rev- elers when he came after his show and joined Mel Ball's group with the lyrics, "It's Not Unusual To Be Jewish." Boris Greisdorf was a busy man one New Year's Eve at his Menjo's on West McNichols ... The place was crowded ... and he had to take over when his cashier failed to show up ... "I made a lot of people happy that night. Look at all the money they saved on my mistakes," says Boris. "Good thing I was the boss. I'd have been fired right on the spot." Bud Sherbow was general manager years back at Jeri's on Woodward when drummer Gene Krupa came in after his New Year's Eve stint at Baker's Keyboard Lounge on Livernois ... Bud remembers going with him to S & C Coffee Shop (Sutton & Clemens) after Jeri's closed ... with Krupa so loaded he -ran from one end of the counter to the other playing everybody's spoons in rhythm. Another New Year's Eve, actor John Ireland came into Jeri's and told Bud he was expecting a phone call ... Bud asked his name and Ireland coldly gave him some loose change and said, "Here, go see a movie once in a while." He says that Jayne Mansfield came into the Scotch 'n Sirloin with her little dogs after a New Year's Eve show at Northland Playhouse ... A steady cus- tomer saw this and went home to get his German shepherd ... Bud says they lost a good customer because the man never came back again when Bud wouldn't let him in with the dog ... "She sent me a note about being a good host, but never did paid her bill." Mickey Bakst, superb maitre d' and general manager at Tribute in Farmington Hills, can't easily forget the New Year's Eve years back at the Studio Club he owned in Newport Beach, Calif. John Wayne's son, Ethan, was in his cups when he invited everyone to go on his father's 110-foot yacht that was docked about a block-and-a-half from the restaurant ... At the stroke of 12, a parade of 140 people, including Mickey, marched out of the Studio Cafe, and continued their reveling aboard John Wayne's former U.S. Navy minesweeper. Happy New Year to everyone ... And drive safely home, not to a hos- pital. ❑ The Sheik of Wiest Bloomfield Invites You To Enjoy the Finest In Middle Eastern Catering For All Occasions • • • • Bar Mitzvahs Bat Mitzvahs Showers Banquets • Anniversaries • Reunions • Holiday Parties • Corporate Events Dean Hachem, Proprietor Customized catering menu created by you • Catering on and off premises Free delivery and hostess provided • Private room for up to 100 people The West Bloomfield & Detroit 4189 ORCHARD LAKE AT PONTIAC TRAIL IN WEST BLOOMFIELD (248) 865-0000 Our second location, The Sheik at Laurel Park, will open in Januaiy, 2001 Open 7 Days a Week for Lunch & Dinner JS 12/29 r 2000 69
