into the mansion
that had once been
a blind pig ... Hank
Greenberg, Goose Goslin and a
few others lookinc, to have some
New Year's Eve fun ... Frankie tripped
on his accordion cord and broke the
instrument ... He was out of luck until
one of the Tiger players said that he
had one in his car ... Frankie spent the
rest of the evening squeezing a toy
accordion.
Louie Weidemann, maitre d'
supreme of Got Rocks Martini &
Cigar Lounge at Big Rock Chop &
Brew House in Birmingham, remem-
bers the first New Year's Eve party, in
1977 at the Le Mignon restaurant he
owned in Chicago.
Louie had 430 reservations for folks
to gobble the appetizers, food galore
and cases of champagne ... But only 52
people showed up ... braving a major
snowstorm that hit Chicago that
evening.
He says there was more waitstaff
than customers ... so the . employees
had their own parties ... taking home
enough food to feed the neighbor-
hood.
Phyllis and Milt Tyner have many
recollections of New Year's Eve "after
hours" at their former Checker Bar-B-
Q on Livernois ... It was a very popular
stop-over of many celebrities after their
shows around town.
One New -Year's Eve, they remember
when Don Rickles appearing at the
nearby Alamo nitery on Livernois, was
on their stage until 5 a.m. ... and they
couldn't get him off
Another year, Barbra Streisand, at
the Caucus Club, came over after
hours to "try out" the songs she would
soon sing on her stepping-stone to
stardom Jack Paar "Tonight Show."
They'll never forget when actor
Howard Duff was appearing at
Northland Playhouse on J. L. Hudson
Drive ... His wife, actress Ida Lupino,
came here to visit him by surprise ...
and was told that he was at Checker
Bar-B-Q Lupino went there, saw
him sitting with some showgirls ... and
was so angry that she broke the win-
dow at Checker.
Mel Ball and Colours were playing a
New Year's Eve ball in the mid-'80s at
Hotel Pontchartrain in Detroit when
someone lit a sparkler cake in the
kitchen and set off the sprinkler sys-
