Tyner's Checker Bar-B on Livernois for
continuation of New Year's Eve fun
with jazz and feasting.
Murray Lieberman making eggs with
both hands after hours at Lieberman &
Citron on Linwood.
Phil Berke running out of New
Year's Eve hats at the Clique on Second
Blvd., and a customer "just happening
to have 50 in his car."
Getting an extra N.Y.E. chicken leg
from Joe Louis at his Brown Bomber s
Chicken Shack.
Abe Chaben buying "drinks on the
house" for the three people still at his
Uncle Abe's Tavern on Seward ... and
10 more walking in as his bartender
made the alcoholic concoctions.
Breakfast at the Bagel on Woodward
and Vernor, where you not only went
to eat, but to see the show biz people
who always came there after their New
Year's Eve performances.
Tom's Tavern on West 7 Mile Road,
where you thought one leg was shorter
than the other because of the slanted
walls.
Phil Berle in town with brother,
Milton Berle, appearing New Year's
Eve at Lofy's Arbor Lil on Ann Arbor
Trail, asking folks for a cigar ... When
nobody had any to give him ... he
reached into his pocket and pulled one
out.
Billy Rose can't forget that New
Year's Eve in 1978 when he and his
band were playing at Vargo's on West 7
Mile ... His friends were all buying
him drinks and by 11:30 p.m., Billy
was loaded to the gills ... and went
home without being there to bring in
the new year ... "I thought it was four
in the morning!" says Billy.
A fond memory he will always cher-
ish was years back while playing at
Grecian Gardens on Monroe ... when
the great Jimmy Durante came in after
his New Year's Eve gig at the Elmwood
Casino in Windsor ... He spent the
entire night and much of the next
morning singing with Billy and his
band.
Frankie Paul Podestio, living in
Naples, Florida, recalls while playing a
New Year's Eve party with his band at
the old Latin Quarter on West Grand
Blvd., when his sax man started to
blow the saxophone and his false teeth
fell out ... It was the end of his sax-
man's playing for the evening ... And
Frankie's 5-piece band later became a
3-piece group when the drummer
couldn't get up off the floor ... after
taking a nip or two following each
song.
Frankie was with his accordion and
band at the Club Powatan, owned by
