Two Jewish documents from 1901
enter into the opening celebration of
Detroit's 300th birthday.
A letter from Rabbi Leo Franklin,
"What the Jews Have Done for Detroit,"
and a report, "Hebrew Homes and
Charities in Detroit," will be revealed
and exhibited at the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra's New Year's Eve Gala.
The documents were sealed
away in the Detroit Century
Box, which was put togeth-
er by William Maybury,
who was Detroit's mayor
a century ago. They will
be shown when current
Detroit Mayor Dennis
Archer heads a ceremony to
open the container.
"We know about these docu-
ments because of newspaper articles from
that time," explains Mary Banks, com-
munications director of Detroit 300.
When Maybury was assembling
documents, the city's Jewish popula-
tion had reached 10,000 and Jewish
workers were employed in factories,
offices, craft establishments and trade
centers. Two Jewish congregations,
Beth El Society and Shaarey Zedek
Society, had been established, and
B'nai B'rith had formed its first local
chapter. The Jewish American had
become the area's first English lan-
guage Jewish newspaper.
The opening of the box will take
place after two New Year's Eve con-
certs, one at 6 p.m. and another at 9
p.m. The ceremony will follow a short
film depicting the last 100 years of
Detroit's history and will be broadcast
live on local television at about 11:20
p.m. on WDIV and WXYZ, and on
radio on WWJ and WJR.
Guest conductor for the program
✓ill be Emil de Cou, who will be
joined by soprano Madeline Bender
and tenor Steven Stolen. The selec-
tions will begin with some immi-
grants' favorites, then move on to
American musical theater.
Also featured will be Viennese
favorites from the turn of the century
as well as songs by Jewish composers,
including Leonard Bernstein, Allan J.
Lerner and Richard Rodgers.
After the second show, there will be
a dessert buffet, champagne toast to
the new year and dancing on the
Orchestra Hall stage to the music of
the Keith Saxton Orchestra. The
Detroit Century Box and its contents
will be on display in the Orchestra
Hall's Greek Lounge until the parry
ends at 1:30 a.m. The Detroit
Historical Museum will display the
box starting in January.
As Detroit's birthday celebration
moves ahead, there will be many
special events and activities.
In January, a Legacy
Breakfast will honor busi-
nesses and organizations that
are more than 50 years old,
while the North American
International Auto Show will
have a marketing program
tied to the tercentennial.
The biggest celebration will be
the Detroit 300 Festival, scheduled for
July 20-26 with Sail Detroit Uuly 20-
21), Sounds of Detroit (July 20-22),
Celebrity Homecoming Concert Uuly
21), Parade of Historic Ships (July
22), Cadillac's Landing Re-enactment
(July 24) and Ecumenical Spiritual
Day (July 26).
Community-based programs include
educational initiatives, family
reunions, partnership meetings, recog-
nition events and youth activities.
A black-tie gala will be held in
October, and the celebration will end
with the official sealing of the
Tricentennial Time Capsule to be pre-
served for opening in 2101.
