fitness club that offers classes and pro-
grams that will help you reach your
fitness goals
"Joining a club that offers special
events for seniors gives you an oppor-
tunity to meet new people close to
your age," says Joyce Weckstein, pro-
gram director of the Young at Heart
senior program at Franklin Fitness &
Racquet Club in Southfield. The pro-
grams include activities in the club's
cardiovascular room, indoor track and
swimming pool, with scheduled
senior classes throughout the week.
Offerings include: Tai chi, yoga
and pilates, for reconditioning and
relaxation of the body and mind;
Spin Max group rides on stationary
bikes; 30 minutes of organized walk-
ing with an instructor; and functional
weight training classes.
"The stretching and flexing classes
involve using active and passive isolat-
ed stretching to help with balance,
which needs improvement as one
ages," says Weckstein.
"Most seniors are very motivated
to come and exercise because of the
wide variety of classes offered. Our
women and men in Franklin's senior
classes come from different back-
grounds with different interests, but
you can always learn new things from
fellow members.

morning of exercise, you
sit down with your new
exercise friends to eat and
learn about healthy infor-
rfiation for seniors,"
Weckstein says.
At the Sports Club's
West Bloomfield and
Novi locations, senior drop-in indoor
tennis is both a social time and a
relaxed way to get moving for anyone,
from the advanced beginner to inter-
mediate levels. Held from 2-4 p.m.
Wednesdays in West Bloomfield, and
7-9 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in
Novi, participants do not need to be
members of the club. Rates are

reduced for seniors to $9 for the two
hours.
"Tennis is a sport for a lifetime as
it is fairly easy on the body," says
Mike Graff, sports director of the
Sports Club in West Bloomfield.
Another class Graff suggests for older
age groups are Aqua Fit, a structured
aerobic class with a warm-up and aer-
