Community Foundation Grants
Bolster Jewish Health Needs

Jewish Family Service of Southfield has
put its $25,000 grant from the
Community Foundation of
Southeastern Michigan to good use. It
added a new bus and hired a driver to
assist in handling calls from the elderly
for transportation to and from medical
appointments.
"We felt very lucky receiving this
grant because the competition was very

stiff in this area," said Karen Fink, JFS
associate executive director.
The Southrfield-based agency was
one of 24 non-profit organizations to
receive a need-based grant from the
Detroit-based foundation. The grant
amounts varied according to organiza-
tional needs. The foundation is focused
on improving the health of young peo-
ple and seniors.

Second Term For Jacobs

State Rep. Gilda Z. Jacobs, D-
Huntington Woods, was sworn in
for a second term on the South
Oakland County Chapter of the
NAACP Board of Directors.
The chapter covers Southfield,
Farmington Hills, Novi, Ferndale,
Royal Oak, Oak Park and Royal
Oak Township.

Recent events the chapter has
hosted include the Freedom Fund
Dinner, which emphasized political
empowerment and get-our-the-vote
initiatives. The chapter has been
working on eliminating the racial
profiling of drivers and helping
minority business owners obtain
loans.
