Inc. Eight months earlier, Katzman
had filed away his name after reading
about him in the Jewish News, figur-
ing he'd be a good contact.
Brown was intrigued by the "Shoes
That Fit" project. He suggested
Katzman contact the principal of
Katherine B. White Professional
Development School, the largest ele-
mentary school in Detroit.
"Everything was beshert [meant to
be]," says Katzman.
She got a warm response from
"dynamic" school principal Linda
Edwards, who assigned a Jewish
teacher at the school, Cheryl \Veiss of
Farmington Hills, to help implement
the project.
Determining needy students at the
school from kindergarten to fifth
grade, Weiss sent permission slips
home to the parents asking if she
could measure their child.
Afterward, Weiss jotted down notes
for each child alongside the recorded
information, such as, "Would love a
party dress" or "Needs a blue sweater,"
and faxed the information to
Katzman's group.
Around Rosh Hashanah, Katzman
put up 30 index cards on a bulletin
board in the lobby at Beth Ahm, one
for each student. They gave each
child's name, measurements, sizes and
what items were needed.
Every card was gone by the end of
the day.
New cards went up for 25 more
students around Yom Kippur, and
again, for Simchat Torah, and all
those cards were taken, too.
"It was inspiring how the commu-
nity responded to our project," says
Katzman. People didn't just take one
card, she says, but four. They bought
not only the shoes requested, but
threw in several pairs of socks, under-
wear, tights and barrettes as well.
Some would completely dress a child,
adding a dress, snow pants, and jeans
— things that weren't asked for. "And
the clothes were new, good clothes,
Katzman says.
Cheryl Weiss says she's amazed that
so many people paid attention to the
little details, the students' requests for
a particular color or other descriptions
she wrote on the cards.
