CAPTIVATING TALE

S
hoshanna Utchenik did not
enjoy puppets when she was
growing up in Huntington
Woods, but they became the
focus of her career after she began
studying art in Chicago.
Utchenik remembers getting a mari-
onette as a childhood gift, quickly put-
ting it back in its box and finding it
strangled by it own strings much later.
Then, as a college freshman, she
heard about the Redmoon Theater
Company. She became intrigued at
how the troupe was transforming all
kinds of objects into puppets. She
decided she'd like to try her hand at
giving life to inanimate forms.
Starting as an intern, Utchenik
worked her way up the ranks and is
now associate artistic director at
Redmoon. She co-designed the sets
and masks that will be seen when the
Redmoon production Hunchback
comes to the Detroit Institute of Arts
Puppet Festival Dec. 29 and
30. She also was assistant
director of the innovative
theater piece based on Victor
Hugo's The Hunchback of
Notre Dame.
The production combines
actors and marionettes,
with each character repre-
sented by both. Characters
shift from live people to
puppets as their places of
power shift in the story.
