Winter Classes
Are Scheduled

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit has a variety of
classes this winter for all ages and inter-
ests at both JCC locations.
New this season for adults is the
"Mambo/Salsa" dance class at the Kahn
Building in West Bloomfield. The
"Jewish Singles Workshop" at the Kahn
Building will focus on using Jewish val-
ues and ideals to strengthen one's life
and meet an ideal life partner.
"Six Steps to Basic Judaism" is a new
Judaic enrichment course offered at the
Kahn Building, which will also host a
"Martial Arts Therapy" course for peo-
ple with special needs. A certified
instructor teaches the latter class, which
is open to people age 5 and up. A care-
giver must accompany each participant
and a medical clearance is required.
A new class called "Little Jumpers,"
for children ages 18-30 months, is at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris JCC Building in
Oak Park. Using games, parachutes and
more, the class will focus on developing
the children's basic motor skills. Kids in
fourth through eighth grades can learn
the secrets of performing magic in the
new "Making Magic Fun" class, also at
the JPM Building.

Each animal is hand crafted
from leather and rendered in
startlingly lifelike detail. (The
monkey is so realistic it
scared our hi-lo driver!) Sure to
spark conversation among your
guests, our wild friends range from
table top size to the towering
five-and-a-half-foot tall giraffe.
Enough zebras, panthers, leopards,
monkeys, elephants and other animals to
start your own zoo!

JCC Earns
Skillman Grant

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit has been awarded
a $420,000 grant from the Skillman
Foundation for inclusion programming.
The grant will provide for the inclu-
sion of children with special needs into
ongoing activities of the JCC, including
summer day camp, preschool and day
care, school break camps and after-
school recreation classes. The funds will
be distributed over three years.
Staffing also will benefit from the
grant. Additional inclusion staff will
be hired for both year-round and
summer programs. Efforts are under
way to recruit qualified staff for
these positions.
The facilities and programs of the
Jewish Community Center, a member
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, are open to every-
one. Individual inclusion assistance,
individual adaptation, accommodation
and support are provided as needed for
those with special needs.
For information about the inclusion
programs, call Nancie Furgang, (248)
661-7737.
