Jewish War Veterans and Ladies
Auxiliary members will go to the Battle
Creek V.A. hospital to bring holiday
cheer to patients on Christmas Day.
The event, sponsored by the Lt. Roy
F. Green, Charles Shapiro and Sgt.
Morton Silverman posts, will feature a
bingo party and distribution of gifts.
Under the chairmanship of Chief of
Staff Milton Klein, aided by post com-
manders Joe Weinman and Hy Deal,
along with past department president
Shirley Schlussel, the bus will leave at 8
a.m. Monday, Dec. 25, from the JWV
Memorial Home, 16990 West 12 Mile,
Southfield.
Patients at the Ann Arbor V.A. hos-
pital will be remembered by a contin-
gent of JWV and auxiliary members,
headed by department Chaplain Tom
Tannis and Co-President Martha
Hauptman, distributing clothing and
sundry items.
The visits, under the direction of
State Commander Herman Sherline
and Auxiliary Co-President Ellie Silk,
are financed by May sale of poppies and
private donations.

Pilobolus Dance Theatre will perform
at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Power
Center in Ann Arbor as part of the
University Musical Society's dance
series. Among the performances will be
a new work, "Davenen," commissioned
by the National Foundation for Jewish
Culture with major support from the
Ford Motor Co. and eight other presen-
ters around the country.
Doris and Jim August of Bloomfield
Hills will host a reception in their home
for national sponsors and other sup-
porters of the NFJC at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 4. The speaker will be
Frank London, musical director of the
Klezmatics and composer of the music
to accompany the Pilobolus work.
Tickets to the Sunday performance
include optional bus transportation to
Ann Arbor from the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building in Bloomfield
Township and a 2:45 p.m. pre-perfor-
mance reception with Jonathan
Wolken, Pilobolus artistic director.

Family Shabbat will be observed at 11
a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Congregation
Beth Shalom in Oak Park.
Designed for families to enjoy
together, the event includes an abbrevi-
ated traditional Conservative Shabbat
service led by congregants. There will
be opportunities for Torah honors.
Children will be encouraged to partici-
pate through songs and creative activi-
ties.
A Kiddush will follow the service.
The service is sponsored by the con-
gregation's Family Programming

Friends is seeking congregants from the
Oak Park synagogue to help members
who are new Americans improve their
English skills.
Sessions are Sunday mornings from
10:30 a.m.-noon and 10 a.m.-noon the
first Sunday of the month.

JCC Presents
Adult Education
Some 35 classes will be offered through
the Jewish Community Center's
Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment
program Feb. 27-March 29 at both
JCC locations.
New this year will be an on-line
course, off-site courses and cooking
demonstration and sampling at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Building. SAJE
courses will be offered in one four-week
session.
A special kick-off event, featuring
Detroit native Rabbi Lawrence
Kushner, is planned for Feb. 13.
Kushner is an author and rabbi in resi-
dence at Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in New York.
Chairing SAJE 2001 are Arthur M.
Horwitz and Doris Blechman.
The seminars are co-sponsored by
the Jewish Community Center, the
Agency for Jewish Education, the
Jewish Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education and the Jewish News. SAJE is
