Special to the Jewish News
t's holiday time, and Sam's Club is
bustling with shoppers. Among the
seasonal items is a "Gemstone Globe"
imported from China.
At $249.99, it commands quite a bit
of Chanukah gelt, but it's a handsome
piece, with the oceans in onyx and the
world's countries in a mosaic of differ-
ent indigenous stones.
But wait! Twirl the globe to the
Middle East, and there, in the black
onyx Mediterranean Sea, next to the
country we
know and
love as Israel,
is, in white let-
ters, the word "Palestine."
If you squint hard, you can see the
word Israel beneath, in brown letters
on the black background. And,
thank goodness, Jerusalem is clearly
marked as the capital. But why
Palestine?
Southfield store manager Tyrone
Washington had no idea. Perhaps, he
opined, the country has two names,
depending if you're a Jew or an
Arab. But stocking the store with
these globes Was clearly not his fault;
they come from Walmart, the parent
company.
I called Walmart and got Mitch,
the Sam's Club Membership
Relations Agent, who reads an offi-
cial-sounding blurb; evidently the
company has received some com-
plaints. In fact, e-mails about the
globe have prompted calls to Anti-
Defamation League offices.
"We have heightened awareness of
the situation," he says. "The mer-
chandise department is addressing
the concern with the supplier."
He explains the logic: The coun-
tries, he says, are written in brown,
the regions are written in white.
This reasoning, however, does not
make it better — since when is the
"region" of Israel called Palestine?
There is no Palestine, only the
Palestinian Authority, according to
ADL's Myrna Shinbaum.
Mitch only repeated that the corn-
pany was "addressing the concern.
