which serves children from 2 months
through kindergarten, will temporarily
move its operations there. Meanwhile,
the existing classroom area will be
remodeled to accommodate 250 chil-
dren. Currently, state safety regulations
limit its use to 150 students.
The two-story remodeling project and
the modular classrooms were made pos-
sible by a "substantial" gift from Irving
Pitt, founder of Murray's Ace Hardware
and Murray's Discount Auto Stores Inc.
Completion of the permanent facility is
expected by fall 2001.
In Jewish tradition, a vital part of
moving to a new home is affixing a
mezuzah to the doorframe. At the Pitt
Center, the ceremony was geared to
small children.
"We have been talking about moving
to a new home and we wanted them to
see it," explained Fredelle Schneider, Pitt
Center director.
Children made their own mezuzot to
take home, she said. They also were
given a chance to touch and, if they
wanted, to give the real mezuzah a cere-
monial kiss.
Presiding over the event was Rabbi
Hal Greenwald, the JCC's director of
Jewish education.
"When moving into a new home,
whether it's a learning home or our
family's home, it. has to be consecrat-
ed," Rabbi Greenwald said. "We
included the kids to show them that
these are not just four walls. This is a
house of God."
