said Jeremy Kahn, a CPA in
Southfield. "Beth and I have learned
the hard way how important it is. If
we wait for everybody to learn the
hard way, it's going to be too late."
Jeremy said he's going to bring in
speakers about donation through organi-
zations he and Beth are active in, such as
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Young Adult and Women's divi-
sions, and anyone else willing to help get
the word out. "A lot of local rabbis have
spoken out from the pulpit," he said.
"I wear a green ribbon on my shirt
every day that promotes organ donation
and whenever somebody asks me what it
is, I explain," he said.
Cook, an attorney with Honigman
Miller Schwartz & Cohn in Detroit,
gave out organ donor pledge cards to
friends at his law office after the surgery,

rr.,tch medically. "He was the freest to
do it, too," Zuroff said. "It just worked
out great that way."
For Jerome, the surgery was extensive,
like that of Jerry Cook. Surgeons had to
make a full incision from the front to
the back, because laparoscopy was not
available at the time.
Zuroff, who is Orthodox, considers
organ donation to be "a true mitzvah."
Now, three years after the transplant,
he says, "I'm doing fine with all my tests
checking out normal."

Spouse To Spouse

When both parents in a family are
involved in a transplant surgery, the
stress is compounded.

At age 52, Mickey faced a
similar fate, unless he could

Mickey and his wife

parents of a son and two
daughters, knew what they
had to do. None of their
adopted children matched
Mickey's blood type, but by
chance, Susan did.
