Berkley heating and cooling contractor checks
out JARC home furnaces for winter.

hen it's cold outside,
JARC clients needn't
worry.
Michael Levey, pres-
ident of Air-Master Heating & Air
Conditioning Company, provided
free service for their furnaces this
winter to keep them warm and,
more importantly, safe.

Michael Levey

On Nov. 30, Levey went out with
a team of three of his Berkley-based
company's trained service techni-
cians to provide inspection, cleaning
and maintenance of heating systems
in nine Jewish Association for
Residential Care (JARC) homes in
Southfield and Farmington Hills. As
it turns out, this volunteer effort
provided a truly vital service: the
inspections turned up two furnaces
with cracked heat exchangers, which
means they could be leaking danger-
ous carbon monoxide.
Levey, in business 18 years, said
the inspections were very much

needed. One of the furnaces had five
cracks in the heat exchanger; the
other had six cracks. He replaced the
faulty furnaces free of charge.
The inspections were conducted
as part of a volunteer service project
run by the parent company. Air-
Master, a division of Service Experts
Co., is part of Lennox Industries of
Dallas, one of the country's largest
heating and cooling firms. All of
Lennox's 220 service centers in
North America participate in the
corporation's "SWAT Team" pro-
ject. Companies provide free ser-
vice to a local charitable cause of
their choice, such as to the elderly
or indigent.
Levey, a West Bloomfield resi-
dent, contacted JARC to volunteer
Air-Master's help. He and his wife
Dolores contribute to JARC and
were pleased to have them as the
recipients of his company's assis-
tance.
"The organization was a plea-
sure to deal with and the JARC
residents are really wonderful peo-
ple," said Levey. "I'm really happy
to be able to help. We actually
were able to perform a very impor-
tant service for them."
Southfield-based JARC provides
dignified assisted living facilities to
the developmentally challenged of
our community. According to
Community Relations Coordinator
Sarah Aasheim, JARC serves 150
adults and 200 families with chil-
dren. About 60 JARC adult clients
live independently; the remaining 90
live in 19 JARC residence homes in
south Oakland County.
"We're really grateful to the
Leveys and Air-Master for helping to
ensure the piece of mind of our resi-
dents," said Aasheim. "Their volun-
teer help also allows JARC to apply
more of its funding to direct pro-
grams.
Levey said he plans to provide com-
plimentary air conditioning service to
the JARC homes in the spring. "It's
very rewarding to me to be able to
give back to the community."
