Statewide Network
Names Director

Susan Herman has been named direc-
tor of the Michigan Jewish
Conference (MJC), a statewide net-
work that represents the Jewish corn-
munity to state legislators and the
governor's office.
A native Detroiter and East Lansing
resident, Herman has over 26 years'
experience in com-
munity coalition
building and advo-
cacy. A graduate of
Michigan State
University, Herman
is the immediate
past director of
Michigan Families
Against Mandatory
Minimums, a
Susan Herman
statewide advocacy
organization for
criminal sentences reform. She has
worked on public policy issues at all
levels of government.
Herman also has developed and
conducted advocacy-training programs
nationally on numerous issues. She is
president of the Lansing Area League
of Women Voters and a board mem-
ber of many area advocacy organiza-
tions.
As director of the MJC, Herman
will work closely with the Jewish
Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit and act on behalf of Detroit
and more than 15 other Jewish com-
munities across the state encouraging
involvement in state politics.

HMC Hosts
Film Screening

The Holocaust Memorial Center will
host a free screening of the film
Girlfriends at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec.
19, at the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
The documentary tells the story of a
group of women whose unique friend-
ship was shaped by the horrors of the
Holocaust. The film was awarded first
prize in the Jewish Video Film
Competition organized by the Judah
Magnes Museum in Berkeley, Calif.
Introducing the film will be Professor
Ilan Avisar, who is the Padnos visiting
professor of Judaic studies at the
University of Michigan. He teaches film
studies at Tel Aviv University in Israel
and is the author of Screening the
Holocaust (Indiana University Press,
1988).
