Conservative Movement
Battles Intermarriage

New York Troubled by rising apathy
toward intermarriage among American
Jews, the United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism (USCJ) is intent
on heightening Jewish identity among
youth.
The 5250,000 initiative seeks to
double the number of members in
United Synagogue Youth, the
Conservative movement's youth pro-
gram, expand the KOACH college
campus program and bring new stu-
dents into the United Synagogue
Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
"The Jewish community is in crisis.
We roust either change our own value
system, thereby signaling our surren-
der, or we must make a renewed effort
to strengthen Jewish identity. Now is
the time to make our commitment to
the future," said Rabbi Jerome Epstein,
USQ) executive vice president.
United Synagogue Youth-will mark
its 50th anniversary next year. It will
try to double its current membership
of 25,000.
KOACH director Richard Moline
said: "As the Jewish community comes
together to work for Jewish identity,
we must take the struggle to promote
intermarriage to every corner of Jewish
life, especially on the campus."

Charged After Raid

Members of Chicago's
Chicago
Jewish community are expressing
shock and dismay about the arrest of a
former temple cantor and his wife of a
few weeks in connection with a prosti-
tution ring.
Joel Gordon, 51, who has served at
several Chicago-area synagogues, was
charged Nov. 21 with keeping a house
of prostitution following a police raid on
three massage parlors, operated out of
private apartments in the northern sub-
urbs. His wife, Alison Ginsberg, 23, was
charged with prostitution and keeping a
house of prostitution. Both declined
comment, when reached by phone at
the home of Ginsberg's mother. The
Cook County Sheriff's Department led
the undercover investigation.
