them to get around."
"I think it is great that we were able
to utilize our communities to help us
and make them aware of our travel-
ing," said West Bloomfield's Sari
Cicurel, a Congregation Shaarey
Zedek member on the steering com-
mittee of Partnership 2000. "It is real-
ly exciting for the Michigan children
to understand their projects will be
taken and given to people in Kiev."
Shelly Katz of West Bloomfield said
the travelers would be visiting many
sites in Kiev that are supported by
Federation and its Annual Campaign.
"Hopefully, our group will generate
some new programs and plan them in
the future," she said.

Using Caution

As for travel security in Kiev,
Weinstock said, "When we went ro
Israel, everyone knew we were Jewish
and it was not an issue. When the
Israelis came here, even though the
United States is not a Jewish state, it
wasn't a concern.
"When we go to Kiev, we will have
to be a little more discreet. It is a gen-
tle reminder that the Kiev community
is not yet open to Judaism." This is
"not cause for concern, but an obser-
vation of how differently we act in
each community," he said.
Cicurel thought about being away
from her family for part of Chanukah's
eight-day celebration, which starts at
sundown on Thursday, Dec. 21, but
said, "This trip is the right thing to
do. It feels good."
She said she has taught her children
about tzedakah (righteous acts), and
that it is hypocritical to not help oth-
ers. "I explained to them that I need to
celebrate with those that haven't cele-
brated before. How can we not go?"
Cicurel expects that seeing the situa-
tion in Kiev will help the travelers to
better appreciate what they have.
"Chanukah is not about Toys R Us,
but about how fortunate we are," she
said. "I am sure the last four days of
Chanukah at home with my family
will be extra special." ❑
