if it's all right to give sweets.) Look
for kosher pez, gummy bears and
worms, and an odd concoction that
has a pretend paintbrush made of
candy which you dip into a pretend
paint can of sour candy — frighten-
ing to parents, delightful to children.

Moving Up: By the time they
reach 8-11, many children are active-
ly working on becoming as "cool" as
they possibly can. You may think,
therefore, that the only gifts that will
interest them are CDs from 'N Sync
and Britney Spears, or clothing that
bears a designer name. In fact, you
can find a number of presents that
manage to be both cool and Jewish.
Girls will like beaded necklaces
that have their names spelled out in
Hebrew letters. These, are available at
Jewish bookstores, where you select a
chain, then blocks with letters
spelling out the girl's name, plus cute
designs like hearts and rainbows.
Don't worry if your spelling isn't
great; find out the girl's Hebrew name
and store workers will happily help
you. (Or, if you have friends in Israel,
you can ask them to get a gold neck-
lace with a name in Hebrew script.)
By this age, most boys already
have a kippah, but if not, you'll dis-
cover that a large number of kippot
meet the vital "cool" criteria.
You can find the Simpsons, Batman
and any other number of favorite TV
characters painted on kippot. Or, con-
sider buying a CD of Israeli rock
music for a boy, or a kiddush cup of
his own (a rallis bag is another idea.
You could buy a talks, but be warned
that these are expensive).
Boys this age also might appreciate
a watch, with the flag of Israel, which
vou can find at watch specialty shops
and some toy stores.
If the child for whom you're shop-
ping likes games, you can find
Hebrew Scrabble at Jewish book-
stores, and you may be surprised by
the array of Israel-centered items at
any general toy store. "Treasure
Chests: The Holy Land," from
Viking Press, is a kit of activities that
allows children to build the Holy
Temple from cardboard, learn about
coins from ancient Israel, and play
games children from long ago
enjoyed.
