the perspective of the people she was
painting."
Showing events that made the
greatest impact on her life, the paint-
ings are very emotional.
Relationships are important, and she
even touches upon her intense love
affair with an older man. Recurring
images, such as the window through
which her mother jumped to her
death and through which Salomon
perceived life, are central to the
series.
Salomon, living in near isolation,
was inspired by remembering the
philosophy of her stepmother's vocal
teacher, Alfred Wolfsohn, who
believed genuine creativity resulted
from pain and loss. Her last piece is
a solitary figure facing the sea with
brush in hand.
"To see the whole dynamic shift in
her style is very moving," Klein says.
"She starts with very naive, detailed
images, then presents portraiture
with close-up views that are more
modern and reduced in detail and
finally gets very graphic and expres-
sionistic."
After World War II, the works
were returned to Salomon's father
and stepmother, who donated the
entire collection to the Amsterdam
museum in 1972. The text has been
translated into four languages, made
into a book (serving as the exhibi-
tion catalogue) and abridged in sev-
eral catalogues.
An 831 page catalogue, Charlotte
Salomon: Life? or Theatre? (Waanders
Publishers; $50) reproduces the
entire series of gouaches and is avail-
able in paperback through the muse-
um.
Salomon's artistry and story, what
she referred to as "a play with
music," has served as the subject of
several films.
