port of his family in his musical
career. There was only one require-
' ment his parents made: Earn a
college degree in another field
so vou can support yourself
Yaniv complied, with a mar-
keting degree from Loyola
University in Chicago. He
now works for Conference
Management Systems, a com-
pany that organizes trade shows
and conventions.
The other Tsaidi brothers are
Yahav, 23, Yahel, 17, and Yagil,
nearly 10.
Yaniv hopes to form a new
musical group with Yahav, to be
called Chedush. "We're bringing
in a whole other twist to Jewish
music," says Yaniv. "It's kind of
like the Jewish rock bands
Piementa [named for guitarist
Yossi Piementa, the group's
founder] and Diaspora.
"My brother really composes
most of the songs. After my second
album is recorded, I'm going to
start working with him."
As for the younger brothers,
Yahel has always wanted to play the
drums and Yagil - "He's my biggest
fan," Yaniv says.
Rabbi Tsaidi says all the musical tal-
ent in the family comes from his wife,
Shulamit. She has a wonderful voice,
and has conducted the children's choirs
wherever we've lived," agrees Yaniv.
Shulamit conducts the children's
choir that accompanies Yaniv on one
of the big hits on his CD, "Yachad"
(Together).
Yaniv will sing the song, an old-fash-
ioned foot-thumping piece by Moshe
Laufer, at the Akiva concert. This
his backup will be the school's Gadalva
Mitchell Kal Haneshama Youth Choir,
conducted by music director Laura
Revelle Schwartz.
Yaniv said he enjoys performing all
types of traditional Jewish music, as
well as modern Israeli pop/rock.
"We like to mix everything in.
That's the message of the album:
unity," he says.
As in the song `Yachad,' as a nation
we cannot survive if the righteous people
cut themselves off and don't help the
other people. Like the three parts of the
Sukkot lulav, each a different kind of
Jewish person. Together they make a
whole. That's what the song symbolizes."
Established musicians who worked
with Yaniv on "Kumi Ori" have noth-
ing but praise for him.
"He is pretty unique," says Gil Nagel,
N.Y.-based musical composer, conduc-
tor and arranger. Nagel, who has stud-

ied in numerous Israeli
conservatories as well
as at The Juilliard
School of Music, says
Yaniv writes songs from
his heart. "He's nor just
trying to imitate other
songs or create a one-
minute hit like everybody
else," Nagel says. "His
music is good — it's
catchy His voice is
unique for this market.
He has a soft voice, and
it's well-trained. He's
not trying to show off,
like vocal gymnastics."
"I like his dedication
to what he's doing," says
singer and songwriter
Yoel Sharabi, who sang
along with Yaniv in the
album's final cut,
"Yemenite and Sephardic
Boom." Sharabi, who
just returned from
bookings in Brazil,
Peru, Argentina and
Uraguay, says becoming
a success in the Jewish
market isn't easy.
"I shared the stage
with him and other enter-
tainers in Chicago; I've seen him on
other occasions," Sharabi recollects.
"I've absolutely seen progress as a per-
former - he's terrific now."
The market for Jewish singers is lim-
ited and there already are established
names, Sharabi warns. However, peo-
ple are always looking for something
new, and Yaniv has managed to get a
foothold in the business.
"I wish him a lot of success,"
Sharabi says. "He will do it — he's
doing fine." Li
