Sylvia A. Rouss, illustrations by Katherine Janus Kahn (Kar Ben Copies Inc.). Yes, arachnids really do observe holidays. Sammy the Spider has been a fixture on the Jewish scene for some time now. He celebrates Rosh Hashanah, Pesach and here, Chanukah, enjoying the holiday by weaving a colorful web of dreidels. Children will love the delightful illus- trations and Sammy's exciting (well, for a spider, anyway) adventures. Ages 7-12: The Ugly Menorah, written and illustrated by Marissa Moss (Farrar Straus Giroux). The Ugly Menorah is the story of a little girl named Rachel who is feeling lonely as she anticipates Chanukah. It is the first Chanukah since her grandfather died, and now Rachel is going to spend the holi- day with her grandmother. Rachel loves making latkes with her grandmother, and as they work Rachel learns the story behind a menorah sitting on the windowsill, that she at first calls "ugly." Her grandmother explains that her late husband had made the menorah during the Depression when they had no money. He found bits of wood and tin, then created what Rachel's grandmother calls a "per- fect" menorah. At the end of the story, Rachel has a whole new understanding of the wooden menorah, which she, too, now sees as beautiful. Ages 10 and above: One Yellow Daffodil: A Hanukkah Story, by David Adler with illustra- tions by Lloyd Bloom (Voyager Books). An exquisite book, One Yellow Daffodil is the story of a Holocaust survivor named Morris Kaplan. He lives alone and goes to work each day at the flower shop, where Morris remembers a time, long ago, when everything around him was dark and sad. One spring morning he saw a bright yellow flower grow- ing in a most unlikely place. That flower gave him hope and courage. Morris believes that flower saved his life. Morris makes friends with two children, Ilana and Jonathan, who come to buy his flowers for Shabbat. When they learn he has not observed Chanukah since he was a little boy, Ilana and Jonathan invite Morris to their home for the holiday. Together, the family and Morris light the can- dles, then Morris begins to speak about his past, of a yellow daffodil that gave him the courage to survive, and of the family he lost. The next night, Morris returns. This time, though, he has his own menorah — one that had belonged to his family when he was a child. He tells of returning to the village in Poland where he was raised: "I thought maybe I would find some of my old friends in the village, but I didn't. I had no one." Mrs. Becker holds Morris' hand and says, "Now you have us." Breathtakingly illustrated, this treasure is so tenderly written it will move you to tears each time you read it.
