For Your Convenience During the Holiday Season today as it was hundreds of years ago. In his book, A Travel Guide To Jewish Europe, Ben Frank sums up the Parisian area succinctly: "People bustle around this old- world neighborhood, which has and always will exude a Jewish atmosphere." Eva and Sheldon Hamburger of West Bloomfield agree. On their honeymoon a few years ago, the couple visited Paris' Jewish quarter. They witnessed the ciry's abun- dance of "Hamish" restaurants, narrow cobblestone streets and old buildings that are still intact, and they experienced that old-world feeling. "We really enjoyed being in the Jewish quarter," Eva Hamburger says. "The Jewish quarter maintains many of the buildings from hundreds of years ago that are part of the Jewish legacy in Paris." The food made strong impressions on the couple — and on others. While the Hamburgers enjoyed some authentic Jewish cuisine — shnitzel, brisket and chicken soup — in a Hamish atmosphere, Gateway Travel President Rochelle Lieberman delight- ed in an authentic apple strudel in a restaurant that was reminiscent of the old country "Just being there leaves you feeling proud of your heritage," Lieberman says. "You feel connected to your peo- ple." Though walking through Paris' Jewish quarter may remind visitors of a stroll through the Lower East Side of New York, it can also trigger less favorable memories. Throughout the Marais neighborhood, plaques hang outside buildings in memory of those who lost their lives during the Holocaust.
