Jewish Vocational Service. Both are
beneficiaries of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit's Annual
Campaign. The agencies' partnership
brings together frail older adults and
individuals with developmental dis-
abilities in a unique way-.
Jewish Vocational Service has hired
and trained 20 adults with disabilities
as full- or part-time wait staff to pro-
vide meal assistance regularly to 335
frail older adults living at various loca-

tions of the Jewish Apartments. This
program makes it possible for senior
residents to participate more fully in
their apartment community and cre-
ates meaningful employment possibili-
ties for adults with disabilities.
Improved self-esteem and greater inde-
pendence benefit both groups.
Viewed as a model for other orga-
nizations and agencies, the Assisted
Meals Program shows how agencies
can effectively work together on many
levels to use resources wisely and make
a real difference in people's lives.
The Jewish Fund was created in
1997 from proceeds of the sale of
Sinai Hospital to the Detroit Medical
Center. The money is used to aug-
ment health and human services avail-
able within the Detroit metropolitan
area. A total of 167 programs received
more than $10 million in the fund's
first three years of operation.
The award, which includes a cash
stipend, will be given annually to a
program that has received a grant
from the Jewish Fund and has demon-
strated innovative programming, out-
standing performance and a commit-
ment to partnerships in keeping with
the concepts of the Jewish Fund.
Mark Schlussel, chair of the Jewish
Fund, said: "The Jewish Fund contin-
ues to identify and support creative
ideas and cooperative initiatives that
have a major impact on improving the
quality of life for the citizenry of met-
ropolitan Detroit."
To date, grants from the Jewish
Fund have had a direct impact on
more than 30,000 individuals. Projects
assisted by the Jewish Fund range
from improving health care and social
welfare for at-risk populations in met-
ropolitan Detroit to strengthening the
bridge between the Jewish community
and the community at large.
"I'm sure Bob [Sosnick] would be
very proud of this award in his memory,"
Schlussel said. "He Nvas a man of vision,
courage, innovation and leadership. He
was pivotal to the creation of the Jewish
