glitzy to be good. That
fact is admirably
demonstrated on the site
called Zemerl: The Interactive
Database of Jewish Song.
The Zemerl site was opened in
1999 "to fill the gap in the online
Jewish music world," according to its
authors. While Jewish pop music
abounds, there was no central reposi-
tory for traditional music in Yiddish,
Hebrew and Ladino.
The Zemerl folks
have tackled the prob-
lem with efficiency and
good taste.
There are more than
400 songs on the site,
and you can browse the
database by category:
family songs, songs for
specific holidays, cha-
sidic tunes, songs about
love and work,
Holocaust-related

music.

With each selection,
there are lyrics and
translations. For many,
there are links to online
music sellers, where you
can buy CDs featuring
the songs — and, in many cases, listen
to sound clips from the recordings.
Zemerl claims to be an interactive
site, and its authors aren't kidding. For
each song, they solicit additional
information from visitors.
Toward the bottom of the home-
page is a list of songs the site's authors
are looking for, and visitors are
encouraged to provide lyrics or infor-
mation.
The interactive motif continues in

a lengthy bulletin-board section in
which visitors from around the world
seek and offer information about
Jewish music.
There's also a feature article on
Yiddish music, some recommended
readings and recordings and a handful
of featured sound clips.
The site's design is straightforward
and uncluttered, and navigation is a
cinch. Nothing fancy here, this is just
a nice site by folks who realize that
content, not glitz, is what matters.
