Health Winter Session For Cancer Group Detroit's Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in collaboration with Temple Israel Rabbi Marla Hornsten, is again presenting its faith-based, spiritual-support group for Jewish cancer patients, survivors and their family members. The program will meet for 10 weeks, starting 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Temple Israel. • Learn how religious beliefs and Jewish practices can be used as strate- gies to help a patient feel more in control of the cancer experience. • Explore personal spirit building with hands-on experiences. • Identify the tools available within Judaism — such as one's belief in God, prayer and ritual — that can provide comfort, hope and coping. • Reframe negative thoughts into positive ones. • Be supported by others living through a comparable experience. Sessions will also address such top- ics as: "why me?", uncertainty, help- lessness, lack of control, the doctor- patient relationship, treatment related concerns, self and body image, the effect illness has on family, reordering life and personal goals, and social relationships. Group leaders will be therapist Brenda Beron and social worker Patricia Milner Sachs, both cancer survivors. There is no charge to attend, but the registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 4. To register, call the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, 800-KARMANOS (800- 527-6266).
