Teacher Earns
Posthumous Honors

The late Howard Cohen, a beloved
physical-education teacher at Owen
Elementary School in Detroit, had a 38-
year career before retiring at the conclu-
sion of the 1999-2000 school year.
At a retirement party last spring, col-
leagues presented him with a token
brick, meant to represent the real brick
that would be installed in his honor on
the paved path around Comerica Park in
Detroit — the new home of the Detroit
Tigers baseball team. They promised
that, when the
actual brick
was in place,
his family,
friends and co-
workers would
take him to the
stadium and
then to lunch
at the nearby
Hockey Town
Cafe.

But three
lives on in his
months after
his retirement, students' memories.
Cohen died of
kidney cancer at age 62.
On Nov. 10, about a dozen of Mr.
Cohen's family members came back to
Owen Elementary, located near Tiger
Stadium, for what they thought would
be a brief get-together to view the brick
and have lunch. Instead, the whole
school turned out for a ceremony that
included letters by students and the
renaming of the school's gym in their
late teacher's memory.
The theme of the event was "Say Yes
to America; Say Yes to Mr. Cohen."
"I myself did not know what cama-
raderie he had with the teachers and the
kids," said Gail Cohen of Farmington
Hills, Mr. Cohen's widow.
Patsy Burks, principal of Owen
Elementary at 3033 Fifteenth Street,
said Mr. Cohen had a real talent for
making students want to do their best.
As leader of the safety patrol, he often
would take patrol members to Tiger
Stadium for games.
"They would say they had to prac-
tice walking to keep up with him,"
Burks said.
