The "Me Generation" was not to his liking, either, especially when it came to caustic comics. "There was no respect, no sense of tradition," says Caesar of the up-and-coming comics who went too far. "They acted like they invented it all." The inventive comedian with the trademark slow burn felt burned in an era when "you're on TV for one or two years and you're a TV star." The comet-like comics he viewed left a trail of dust and ashes. Certainly, there were stars who lit up their own constellations, like Jerry Seinfeld, says Caesar. "I enjoyed him." But the master of comedy soon grew tired of Seinfeld's so-called mastery of his own domain. "He became a one-note character." On that note, Caesar can settle back into a different fiefdom of fun — his own. With the release of his collected tapes — with more to come each year, culled from the 450 hours available — Caesar chuckles at the prospects of younger audiences "discovering" him. "They've never seen this comedy before; they'll be shocked that there's no dirty language," says the comedian who's been married to the same woman for almost 60 years. (He met his wife, Florence, as he perfected his craft as a jack-of-all-trades in the Catskills.) But isn't all of comedy a common language after all is said and done? Sure, that's what new viewers will discover, says Caesar. "They'll laugh at things [on the tapes] that happen to them in their own lives." In his own life, Caesar still stays in touch with the quick-witted kibitzers who were the stallions in his stable of writers, such as Mel Brooks and Neil Simon, whose Broadway comedy, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, was the sto- ried saga of the Caesar writers' room. With The Sid Caesar Collection, Sid Caesar provides a room with a view of what made audiences laugh for so long and so hard so long ago. Without argument, Sid Caesar is still one of the masters of the universe — that comedic universe of Yonkers and beyond, where planets and punch lines collide in the night and the Man in the Moon is forever smiling. ❑ If you like fresh Whitefish then you're going to truly enjoy our 15th Annual "Whitefish Festival" going on now through December 30th at the Seafood Tavern.
