id Caesar's salad days came
complete with croutons of
comedy accented in
Russian dressing, with a
dash of German gibberish on the
side. In fact, his was a buffet of buf-
foonery.
Of course, over the course of
years, the humor became saddled
with some side dishes of tsores and
sadness that made Caesar seem even
more a piece de resistance.
But in the end, the Jewish comic
genius is getting his just desserts. At
a gala dinner on Monday, Dec. 11,
at the Hotel Pierre in Manhattan,
the National Foundation for Jewish
Culture will present Caesar with its
third annual Alan King Award in
American Jewish Humor (King won
the first award, followed last year
by Caesar cohort Carl Reiner).
"Sid Caesar grew up in a Jewish
household where music, humor,
sarcasm and undemonstrative
love abounded," noted Reiner of

Now, at 78, Caesar can loosen his

the comic camaraderie he created on
stage with people like Reiner,
Howard Morris, Imogene Coca and
Nanette Fabray.
Healthy but no longer possessed of
the Herculean strength that once
enabled him to dangle Mel Brooks
out of a 20th-floor window — or
punch out a horse in Central Park
